Durango Snowdown Events for Friday
It’s that time of year again where Durango, Colorado celebrates winter with a week long event called Snowdown! This year’s theme is “Back to the Eighties”
Here’s what is planned for the third day of Snowdown on Friday:
ALL DAY
Snowdown T-Shirt Day
Take advantage of the day and don a favorite Snowdown apparel item – the one, the only, the 80s 2016 Snowdown T-Shirt – long sleeved for winter warmth! Available at Magpies’s and other fine local establishments – wear it with style.
11 AM
Snowdown Totally Awesome Scavenger Hunt – Judging
Billy Goat Saloon – 39848 HWY 160 Gem Village
Doors open at 9:30am, judging at 10am sharp.
2 PM
Snowdown Waiter/Waitress Race
Steamworks (in the alley) – 801 E 2nd Ave
Traditionally one of Snowdown’s wildest events. Coed teams of servers from area restaurants compete in a fun and frequently messy obstacle course that incorporates waiting skills and 80s flavor. Teams must be 2 male and 2 female members of a local restaurant’s wait staff.

Pre-sale Tickets for Snowdown Chili Cook Off & Bloody Mary Contest
BREW Pub & Kitchen – 117 W College Drive
Avoid long lines and standing in the cold to get Durango’s finest Chili and Bloody Mary’s. Purchase tickets Friday afternoon at BREW Pub & Kitchen 3 – 4 PM only.

4 – 5 PM
Four Square Tournament
Durango Welcome Center – 802 Main Ave
The object is to be in the lead square #1 at the end of play. Players take a kneeling position in each of the four squares. All you Madonna wannabes get down on your knees! The player in square one serves a playground ball by bouncing it once in their square, then hitting it into another square.

80s Costume Contest
Grassburger Parking Lot – 726½ Main
Righteous costume contest for youth and teens! Be trendle and wear your best 80s costume for a chance to win!
Open to all youths and teens in 6th through 12th grade.

Hand on the Van
Grassburger Parking Lot – 726½ Main
Come try your hand at the Mayor’s Youth Advisory Commission’s Hand on the Van event. Participant who keeps their hand on the longest wins…
Open to all youths and teens in 6th through 12th grade.

Human Pac Man
Moe’s Lounge – 932 Main Ave
Very cool! Participants gobble up as many pac dots (or you can call them pellets but how gross is that?) as they can in a predetermined amount of time. Pac dots will be placed around the bar in a maze. Participants need to book it from blinky, pinky, Inky, and Clyde. The event will finish before the parade starts. Participants are encouraged to stay and watch the parade from Moe’s.

80s Photo Fun
Durango Welcome Center – 802 Main Ave
Show off your 80s attire and capture the fantabulous moment forever with a fun photo. The Welcome Center is hosting a Free (only one per person) photo booth for all ages.

The Snowdown Chow Down to the Max
Durango Elks Lodge – 901 E 2nd Ave (enter at the 9th st entrance)
Most definitely join us at the historic Durango Elks Lodge #507 for an 80s dinner! Menu: Manwich sloppy joes, tri-colored pasta salad and a fresh side salad. Tea/lemonade available – before, during, or after the parade… an annual fave! In addition to a tasty meal, we’ll be serving up hot and cold beverages at our cash bar. All age welcome!
Event Cost: Adults $8, kids 10 and under $5
Prizes: Best Costume in the house at 6pm (child), 7 & 8pm (adult)
6 PM (Dusk)
The Snowdown Firework!
A Snowdown tradition! A single firework kicks off the Snowdown Parade when the Parade Honorary Marshall gives the signal. This beacon will light your way to hours of FUN and entertainment! Our many thanks to Durango’s hearty crew of firework starters (and fire-putter-outers!)
This show is hosted by the Snowdown Board and sponsored by Serious Texas Barbeque, Three Springs, Tile & Light Art of Durango, The Wells Group, C&J Gravel Products, Ron’s Plumbing, and Jaquez Rocket Ranch.

Snowdown Light Parade
Main from College Drive to 12th Street
Durango’s only nighttime parade, where 80s themed lighted floats create a dazzling delight in Durango’s most fantabulous and entertaining procession along Main Avenue. Entrants are encouraged to incorporate lights on their floats and processions. Floats compete for trophies in 10 divisions with special emphasis on the use of lights and theme. ( You must submit an application to participate in the parade)

Snowdown 80s Teen Flash Dance
La Plata County Fairgrounds Exhibit Hall – 2500 Main Ave
Hosted by Century 21 Premiere/Adaptive Sports
Cowabunga! This is where all the cool and totally awesome come to shake a leg. This dance is for teens & tweens, and proceeds support local non-profits. A safe environment for all local youth to enjoy a 80s themed Snowdown dance. Music will be provided by a DJ and there will be pizza and beverages for all kids attending. This event is open to all area youth ages 10-18. Dress in your best 80s gear. Prizes for dance contest and costume contest.
PARENT MUST SIGN PERMISSION FORM!

Twister
Moe’s Lounge – 937 Main Ave
This wicked event starts immediately after the parade is finished. As if you don’t know, Twister is played on a large plastic mat and players are often required to put themselves in unlikely or precarious positions, eventually causing someone to fall. Totally awesome!

Snowdown Follies
Live at both: Henry Strater Theatre – 699 Main Ave, and Durango Arts Center Theatre – 802 E 2nd Ave
The Follies return for the 33rd year of entertainment with your favorite showbiz personalities and local commentary. This notoriously outrageous and irreverent review performss in these two theatres simultaneously. Really! Cash Bar! Ticket purchases are limited to four per person for this smash show performed by an all volunteer cast and crew! Ticket sales support Snowdown, remember, this is adult entertainment. Radio stations KIQX & KIUP will announce over the air the secret locations where a morning person 80s enthusiasts can line up to obtain coupons for the purchase of follies tickets. Actual ticket sales will commence at 6:30 am at the Elks Lodge, 9th Street entrance.
-Ticket Marketplace at Bank of the San Juans: 12 tickets will be sold (in lots of 4) to the highest bidder each day for 4 days beginning Tuesday Jan 19, 2016 (through Friday Jan 22). Bids will be received in person only, no telephone calls at 144 E 8th Street.

If you missed the ticket sales for the Follies this year, watch the show on the big screen at the Animas City Theatre. It’s almost as good as the real thing – at half the price. Chapman Challenge Uphill/Downhill Race
Chapman Hill Ski Area – 500 Florida Road
This event is so flash! An uphill/downhill race at Chapman Hill where all forms of human snow travel (skis, snowshoes, running, snowboards, shovels, whatevah) are welcome. The race will consist of two or three laps up and down Chapman Hill Municipal ski area. Race begins at 7:30 PM directly following the Snowdown Light Parade.

Fort Lewis College Softball Complex – 1000 Rim Drive
Two happen’en rival teams – Purgatory Mountain Patrol and the Ski/Snowboard School, continue their 38 year rivalry in the Ski Softball – softball played on skis and boards! Make your way to one of the most popular Snowdown events!
