Durango Snowdown Events for Wednesday
It’s that time of year again where Durango, Colorado celebrates winter with a week long event called Snowdown! This year’s theme is “Back to the Eighties”
Here’s what is planned for the start of Snowdown on Wednesday:
9 AM: Snowdown Doughdown
-Doughnut Eating Contest at Durango Doughworks, 2653 Main Ave
Event Cost: Free (or your new year resolution)
Entry Deadline: 15 minutes before event, first come first served
Prizes: 1st: $100 gift card, 2nd- $50 gift card, $25 gift card, Doughworks Swag
9:30 AM: Paint Up Snowdown
-Durango Arts Center – 802 E 2nd Ave
Art competition, Artwork should be themed around Durango Snowdown events or Back to the Eighties. Entries are due at 10 AM Saturday Jan 30. Paintings will be Judged at noon and exhibited until 3pm. Entrant’s paintings will be for sale, proceeds split between Durango Art Center, Snowdown, and the artist
Event Cost: $5 for adults, free for children
Entry/ Sign-up Deadline: 9 AM Wednesday Jan 27 (children do not need to sign up)
Prizes: 1st, 2nd, and 3rd
12 PM – 1:45 PM (doors open at 11:15 AM, lunch and event starts at 12 AM)
Snowdown Fashion Do’s & Don’ts
La Plata County Fairgrounds – Exhibit Building (2500 Main Ave)
A yearly favorite, the aim in this event is to dress the most ridiculously 80’s themed outfit. Durango once won USA Today’s “Worst Dressed Community” and we aim to keep that title. This event is geared towards ADULTS and can be a bit warped, so don’t bring your kids to this one.
Event Cost: Tickets are $15 each for regular seating, $20 each for runway tables; $6 each for SRO holding up the hall’s walls (no seat, food or drink) **Note: tickets are sold early on Jan 16th and are almost certainly sold out by now**
Prizes: Best Dressed, Worst Dressed, Funniest Costume, Best Theme, and Grand Prize
12 PM to 8 PM
Snowdown Totally Awesome Scavenger Hunt
Billy Goat Saloon – 39848 US HWY 160, Gem Village
Teams of 4 will scour the highways, the byways, and the hang-outs around Durango for the items on the list. Pick up the lists at the Billy Goat Saloon between 12 PM till 8 PM. There are 100 items on the list for you to find and all the items will fit in a City of Durango blue recycling box. The team who returns with the most items on the 29th (9:30 AM with judging at 11 AM) wins
Event Cost: $20 per team of 4
Event Deadlines: List pick up from 12 PM till 8 PM the 27th, Judging from 9:30 AM till 11 AM on the 29th
Prizes: All Legal Tender for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd

The TV classic with our 80’s Snowdown flavor. Four 4-person teams will compete for top prize.

Snowdown Costume Contest
The Palace Restaurant – 505 Main Ave
Come on down to the Palace in your best Snowdown costume, enjoy your favorite libations and snacks while strutting your 80s style!

Annual Bartender’s Contest
Moe’s Lounge – 937 Main Ave
The Official Snowdown 2016 Cocktail is chosen during this traditional event, 38 years running.You don’t have to be a bartender to enter but you must be 21+ years old. All cocktails will be judged on presentation and taste.

80s Scene It? Snowdown Showdown
Animas City Theatre – 128 E College Drive
Test your memory of everything from Pac-Man to Ray Ban and enjoy on screen trivia that features 80’s music, movies, news, and sport moments.
Event Cost: $40 team of 4, limited to 10 teams

11th Annual Snowdown Kids Follies
Durango Arts Center Theatre – 802 E 2nd Ave
Come and enjoy the annual Snowdown Kid’s Follies, a fun and exciting version of the snowdown Follies that allows kids in the community to display their talents.
Kids 8-18
Net proceeds of this show go to support the annual Kid’s Snowdown Follies and scholarships for the performing arts program, “DAC applause!”
Two performances on Wednesday the 27th, 5 PM and 7:30 PM and two more Thursday the 28th, 5 PM and 7:30 PM.

A gauntlet race made up of everyone’s favorite 80s games and toys. Trivia and a bit of drinking mixed in to keep it interesting.

Snowdown 2016 Spellebration

Spellebration is the one and only spelling showdown of Snowdown! 12 (3 person) teams compete with cocktails and costumes in this adult spelling bee.
This is a family friendly event (somehow)

Event Cost: $200 entry fee per team of 3

A Snowdown twist on the classic party game “Quarters”

Snowdown’s oldest music trivia contest, teams of 4 test their knowledge of music trivia in a variety of musical genres. Finals will be held on Thursday the 28th.
Hosted by AIKO AIKO Sound.
Event Cost: $40 per team of 4
Entry Deadline: 30 minutes prior to opening rounds
Prizes: Split the pot cash awards to top 3 teams for Best Team name, Best 80s costume, and winner of trivia

Time once again to get out your cool cribbage board and sign up for this event! Regular 6-card play, single elimination. Bring boards and cards if you have them. Sign up early as this has been a hugely popular event for years

Snowdown Euchre Tournament
Veterans of Foreign Wars – 1550 Main Ave
A fun, fast moving card trick taking game usually played with a partner. Play Euchre by house rules, practice from 5-6 PM. Tournament registration at 6pm. every player guaranteed 2 rounds of play in this double elimination tournament.

Back for the 21st year in a row, the most Lady Falconburgh hosts this display of intrepidity, smarts, cool brains, and 80s wits. Jeopardy and Trivial Pursuit aficionados will love this team event. Test your memory, knowledge of mindless drivel, buzzer speed, and fast smooth moves. Limited to 16 teams, Wednesday and Thursday are elimination rounds for the Big Time Saturday Night Finals.

Inspired by the “Polar Bear Plunge”, this event introduces a new medium – BEER! Head on over to Carver’s patio where you’ll bob for fabulous prizes, no hands allowed. The coveted Golden Plunger will be awarded to the individual who performs the judges’ favored plunge. Bring a change of clothes.
